Hello Readers,
In this blog I will be doing an analysis over the album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" by Kanye West. This album is composed of 12 songs and 1 interlude with each song telling a story about Kanye West's struggle with fame and the expectations that come with it.
The album begins with the song "Dark fantasy" which is about Kanye's early adulthood and his desire to become famous in the music industry. It includes lyrics such as "I fantasized about this back in Chicago" and "That's me the first year that I blow, how you say broke in Spanish me no hablo". These lyrics show his early days being a rapper and his "Fantasy" for the future. The next song "Gorgeous" includes lyrics stating that it doesn't matter what it is, Kanye wants it. This song shows Kanye's struggle with greed and that because of it, he can feel his fame slowly slipping away. This song leads into the next song and my personal favorite, "Power". In this song Kanye goes on an egotistical power trip where he states that "No one man should have all this power". Him ignoring the signs that what he's doing is wrong and continuing to do it anyway leaves the listener feeling uneasy afterwards. at the end of the song Kanye contemplates killing himself at the peak of his career so he doesn't fall our of fame later in his life. Kanye obviously doesn't decide to kill himself which leads into the next 2 songs, "All of the lights interlude" and "All of the lights". "All of the lights interlude" is a mix of a few instruments, most notably the violin and piano, playing a somber tune with no spoken words. Without any lyrics it's hard to determine what this song is supposed to mean but I like to imagine it as a quiet and sad time in Kanye's life without any flashing lights and fame. "All of the lights" is an upbeat song where Kanye talks about wanting to see all of the lights. This is a good song but it's just another song about Kanye's lust for fame.
The next set of songs are where the listener can see a shift in Kanye's mentality with the first song being "Monster". This song has features from hip hop legends such as Nicki Minaj and Jay-Z. Kanye states in this song that he knows he's a bad person and that he wants all the gossip about him to stop. After this, the next song is "So Appalled". This song is where we really see Kanye start to understand his actions and want to change for the better, stating that he's appalled at his previous statements and doings. The next song in this beautiful lineup is "Devil in a new dress". This song might sound like a love song at first but beneath the wonderful music in the background, the lyrics have a deeper meaning. They state that Kanye's lover is acting like she doesn't know him now that Kanye wants to escape his pervious life. He states all the things he loves about her then leaves us with "Tonight you should've seen how quiet the room was". The next song and possibly the most famous of them all is "Runaway". This song seems to happen directly after the events of "Devil in a new dress" where Kanye tells his lover to physically and metaphorically runaway from him. He states that He's no good for her and that he's an "A*shole, scumbag, douchebag, etc" Kanye wants her to leave for her own good but is unsure how he'll manage when she actually leaves. With Kanye's lover gone he goes out to the city and begins to have some fun. This is where the song 'Hell of a life" pick up. This song has some pretty explicit lyrics but just know that this song is about a rich single man partying at the club. That's all you need to know. The final stretch of songs include "Blame Game", "Lost in the world" and "Who Will Survive In America". "Blame Game" is a song about Kanye's lover coming back and them fighting a lot, "Lost in the world" Is about Kanye's lover leaving him once again and him felling lost and unsure of what to do, and "Who will survive in America" Is more of an interlude song where Kanye sings very little but wonder what he needs to do to make it in America's massive music industry.
Overall I think this album is great and shows a progression of Kanye's life in the music industry as a growing rapper. I highly recommend you go take a listen to it and see what hidden meanings you can find.
Thanks for reading,
Madden
(P.s I don't support Kanye's actions I just like his music)
