A New York Times Special: The Sudden Rise of Wordle

For the final blog post, I decided to review an article on the New York Times rather than on the Times Magazine.  Even three years later, this article holds up well, showcasing the rise of a popular game called Wordle.

For those who don’t know, Wordle is a game where you have to guess a 5-letter word in six tries, with each try you slowly narrow down the possible words and letters. The simple game became a worldwide hit, with 300,000 people playing each day. It started with a software engineer in Brooklyn named Josh Wardle creating a game as a gift for his partner. He released it online to the public in October for his friends and family to play. Across the world, Wordle became a morning routine. For me personally, I remember coming into 6th grade in the morning, and everybody at school playing the game right before the first class. My music teacher got so mad one day when a student wrote the Wordle answer on the board before anybody did the daily Wordle.

The article was written in 2022, when Wordle was in its prime. Therefore, I will personally talk about Wordle’s downfall. Over the years, Wordle was bought by The New York Times, causing no actual difficulty in the game, speaking from my experience. Before the purchase of Wordle, the difficulty increased over the days of playing the game. Many viewers reported Wordle to be easier in difficulty. Also, many other bootleg games imitated Wordle, stealing from its player base. So that is it for my blog posts this year, so thanks for reading my blogs, have a fun finals week, and good luck on that Math Test!
