One by One - A Review

One by One - A Review

Hello all, this will be the 5th blog on the Giggity Goobers. And today I’m going to review the novel One by One by Ruth Ware.

The book follows a dual-perspective format, swapping between two female protagonists, Erin and Liz. Erin is a chalet girl, paired together with Danny, and they operate the Chalet Pierce-Niege, a prestigious skiing resort in France. On the other hand, Liz is a former employee of the renowned company, “Snoop”, which runs an app that allows one to “snoop” into what a person listens to in real time. Anyways, Liz was dragged to the resort by her former colleagues at Snoop–along with some new employees–to take a skiing retreat. But little does the group know, that all of them would be submerged in an unexpected mystery as one of them goes missing on one fateful slope. Soon, it’s a race for time as more turn up dead, and a raging storm outside severing the connection to the outside world, putting them in danger of the elements. Who will survive? Who will not? And most importantly, who did it?

The novel was quite a fun read, immersing me into the world of Snoop as the company’s problems and individual issues emerge as they struggle to find out whodunnit. However, I did have some issues with the way it was written. First of all, it moved fairly slowly. I’m pretty sure it was supposed to be some sort of in-depth exposition session or something, but the exposition lasted far too long. But after the long exposition-session had ended, the book moved fast.

And my final issue with the novel is with how the author tried to mask the identity of the murderer. I’m not going to spoil anything about the novel, but the way she tried to hide them was fairly orthodox amongst murder mystery novels. If you looked closely at how the author wrote in certain areas. Now, the ability to identify the culprit may be a result of my familiarity with the genre and the typical character choices made by authors, rather than a sign of the author's poor writing. So this may just be me.

The book gets a solid 8/10 :) But anywho, thanks for reading my 2nd blog! Boomshakalaka

  1. Hey, Mattox. Your breakdown of the plot and characters has me pretty intrigued. The dual-perspective format sounds like an interesting way to build suspense, even if the slow start might take patience. It sounds like the story still delivers a mystery. Thanks for the recommendation—I'll probably check it out!

  2. Hey! I like when reviewers review the bad, as well as the good, even if they did like it. It shows they actually analyzed the book, instead of just passively read it. Great review!
