The Runaway Jury

                                    Book Review: The Runaway Jury

Hello, a big reason for me writing this book review is because my friend Tom reviewed a book by one of my favorite authors, John Grisham. So, I decided to write about my favorite book written by Grisham, The Runaway Jury.

The whole book is about one court case. In which a woman named Celeste Wood is suing a tobacco company called Pynex for the early demise of her husband, who was a lifelong smoker of Pynex’s cigarettes. The court of law is always supposed to be fair, sadly tobacco companies like Pynex have hundreds of millions of dollars. So Pynex does in-depth background studies on every single jury candidate for the court case. This leads to people being dismissed for the case. One in particular goes into an outburst about how he should’ve been chosen. Later Pynex talks about the candidate’s mother passed away from lung cancer caused by smoking. Slowly juror spots are taken and every single juror has tons of information that Pynex has.

Except Nicholas Easter who has little to no information to his name. In a rush for time, Pynex agrees to him being a juror. Little does Pynex know, but Nicholas Easter is a master manipulator. Allowing him to easily change people’s ideologies and opinions. So he blackmails Pynex for $10 million for the final verdict. This leads to Pynex scrambling, sending threats, and taking apart his home. What will Nicholas do? What will be the final verdict?

Reading this book introduced me to new law terms and the corruption of the court. Most of all if you enjoy a good suspense/justice novel, I suggest giving this a read. I rate this book a 9.1 out of 10 as it can be a hard read besides that it is an amazing story. Also, read any of John Grisham’s novels, he’s my dad’s favorite author and one of my favorite authors. He has won many awards and is a lawyer as well.

  4. This book sounds very unique, and last year I really liked the court cases in social studies, so I will check this one out. Your 2nd paragraph confused me but I think I understand it enough. I like how inspired you are by Tom. Grisham sounds like a good author that I will have to check out.

  5. This reminds me of a book called "Thank You for Smoking", which is satire about lobbying in the tobacco and nicotine industry. Definitely a scary place to be, fighting against companies that know they're killing people, yet need to advertise anyway. Great post!
